Earlier this year, the Upper Bay of Panama—a WHSRN Site of Hemispheric Importance—became part of Panama’s National Protected Area system, bringing the bay’s 200,000 acres of wetland habitats under permanent legal protection! This site, which is also a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, hosts more than 1 million shorebirds annually, including 30% of the world’s population of Western Sandpipers (Calidris mauri). Congratulations to our partners Panama Audubon Society and the National Environmental Authority of Panama! Their years of dedication made this important milestone in conservation possible.
