Responding to the conservation priorities established in the U.S. Shorebird Conservation Plan, the WHSRN Executive Office collaborates with shorebird experts in partner organizations to develop and publish action-oriented species conservation plans. In May 2009, we completed the Conservation Plan for the Mountain Plover (Charadrius montanus) – the tenth in an ongoing series. In this 52-page plan, co-authors Brad Andres (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service) and Kelli Stone (Two Birds One Stone, LLC) summarize what is known about the species’s ecology, status and population, habitat needs, threats, and important sites. They also identify and prioritize conservation actions needed in the short term to stop or reverse the species’s population decline for the long term. We are grateful to Brad and Kelli for their tireless efforts, and to the many shorebird biologists and conservation partners who contributed data, other information, and feedback along the way to bring this plan to fruition.
