Abstract:: The mission of the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network (WHSRN) is to conserve shorebird species and their habitats across the Americas through a network of key sites. The data set shows the locations of WHSRN Sites as points.
Purpose:: To enable viewing of WHSRN sites with ArcGIS (shapefile) by the general public, site partners and the research community, for conservation, cartographic, educational, research, government or other not-for-profit uses.

The points show a location in each of the WHSRN sites representative of shorebird habitat. They are not necessarily in the middle of each WHSRN site, but they fall within their boundaries. Whenever WHSRN sites have several non-contiguous units, the points were located at the largest unit.

Mean coordinate locations of WHSRN sites were chosen first. If those weren't satisfactory for Google Earth viewing, either because they didn't depict shorebird habitat or they fell outside the site boundaries, the points were moved to a better location inside the WHSRN Site boundaries. Those coordinates were updated in the Shapefile.
