Description

In September 2007, the WHSRN Hemispheric Council voted unanimously to approve the Zona Federal del Lago Texcoco [Lake Texcoco Federal Zone] in central Mexico as a WHSRN Site of Regional Importance. Lago Texcoco is a 10,000-hectare federally managed wetland in Mexico State, located almost immediately adjacent to the Mexico City Airport, that supports well over 20,000 shorebirds annually—Wilson’s Phalarope (Phalaropus tricolor) most abundantly. This site is also recognized nationally as an Important Bird Conservation Area (AICA, by its Spanish acronym). Many thanks to Eduardo Carrera and Aurea Estrada of Ducks Unlimited de Mexico for their collaboration with Mexico’s National Water Commission in nominating this deserving site.
